Four Life Lessons from Lizzo That We’re Embodying in 2020 (and beyond)

Posted on 13 January 2020

TIME’s 2019 Entertainer of the Year?  Check. 2020 Grammy-nominated musician? Double-check.

In the past year, Lizzo has broken the mold of beautiful and taken the world by storm through her energetic, body-positive performances. In doing so, she has inspired us to live our lives to the fullest in 2020 (and beyond) and taught us some seriously important life lessons in the process.

She understands the importance of staying true to her passions.

Melissa Viviane Jefferson, affectionately called ‘Lizzo’, has always had an affinity for music. Her first love? And no, it wasn’t thigh-high boots and sparkly bodysuits. It was actually the flute. Lizzo is a classically trained flutist who earned her degree in classical flute performance from the University of Houston. A self-proclaimed band nerd, Lizzo has garnered attention as a gifted singer-songwriter, rapper and—you guessed it—flute player. Never leaving the stage without gracing her audiences with at least one performance of her brilliant flute-playing, Lizzo reminds us that no matter how famous you get, your true passions will never leave you if you continue to cultivate them.

Her body positivity is contagious.

Even Lizzo has not-so-good body image days. She makes that very clear in her interview with TIME magazine where she was crowned TIME’s 2019 Entertainer of the Year. But even still, her unabashed body positivity reminds us that breaking the mold of beautiful requires a hearty dosage of self-love and a heaping handful of confidence.

She recognizes when to step away from toxic energy.

Earlier this year, the singer announced she was taking a step back from Twitter after receiving some nasty comments about her health and body size, which understandably began to take a toll on her mental health. Cyberbullying is bullying, folks. And no one should have to endure that. Taking a cue from Lizzo, if it’s hurting and not serving you, it’s 100% okay to walk away.

She hustles quietly and chases her dreams.

It was only last year that Lizzo became a household name across the globe. Her song, “Truth Hurts” caught the attention of many after it was featured in the Netflix Original Movie, Someone Great, starring Gina Rodriguez, DeWanda Wise, and Brittany Snow. However, unbeknownst to some, Lizzo has been making music and putting out body-rolling hits since 2013. She reminds us that with a lot of perseverance and hard work, the wildest of dreams really can come true. Um, did someone say 2020 Grammy Award Winner

We stan a true queen.
